Magnetic Island Unveiled

Magnetic Island, lovingly referred to as ‘Maggie’ by locals, is a pristine treasure spanning 53 square kilometres. With over 75% of this island paradise dedicated to national parks, it boasts 23 tranquil bays and beaches, rugged landscapes, and a rich array of wildlife. It's no surprise that Magnetic Island is the most visited national park within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park area.I

Beyond The Name

Ever wondered why it’s called Magnetic Island? Legend has it that when Lt. James Cook sailed past in 1770, his compass malfunctioned, leading him to believe the island had magnetic properties. Although this wasn't true, the name endured, giving birth to Magnetic Island.

Magnetic Island's Climate

With more than 320 sunny days each year, Magnetic Island is a welcoming destination year-round. Temperatures range from a comfortable 19°C to a warm 28.7°C, with cooling sea breezes making it a degree cooler than the mainland. Even during the ‘off-season,’ Magnetic Island offers new and exciting experiences.

Seaside Paradise

In winter, sea temperatures can drop to a refreshing 23°C, while in summer, they can rise to a tropical 29°C. If visiting between November and April, it's advisable to wear a stinger suit to protect against marine jellyfish stings.
